On May 15th and 16th, the Syracuse Area Youth Workers (SAYW) network is offering a special all night activity for youth groups in the Syracuse area called the SYRACUSE TOUR 2009. This will be the eleventh year that the network has planned, promoted and produced this outreach event. Last year we had over 650 teens from many local churches participate. This year we are expecting for that number to grow. In a 12 hour time period (7 p.m. to 7 a.m.), you and your young people will play mini-golf, bowl, go ice skating, play a variety of sports/games in a large indoor sportscenter, have a private screening of an appropriate movie, get an event t-shirt, eat pizza at night, be eligible for some great giveaways AND be a part of an outreach service geared specifically toward youth!!! Our speaker this year is Ken Freeman. When you register your church you will receive a full schedule of the evening. The best part is that each of your teens gets all this provided for just $30. ($15 for adult staff) The Syracuse Tour is open to all church youth groups with teens (7th-12th grade). REGISTRATION deadline is Friday, May 8th.

Syracuse Tour begins Friday (5/15) at 7 in the evening and finishes at 7 the next morning. Each group meets and registers teens at their own church. Youth groups travel in their own vehicles to the first stop and meet other groups there. Everyone’s first stop of the evening is a local mini-golf course. You will be told which one you are going to when you register. At the mini-golf course you will be responsible to pay a per head amount for your group only. The next event brings the entire group together at Believer’s Chapel for pizza and the outreach. At this stop you will give the entirety of your group’s remaining money to your area leader (made known to you when you register) and will not be responsible to make any payments for the rest of the evening. This payment must be in the form of ONE check made out to SAYW. There will be four different area groups. After the outreach, you will rotate throughout the evening to various venues with your area group. Each of these stops lasts an hour and a half. You will end up back at your church around 6:45. Please note that groups are not allowed to change schedules or pay for partial aspects of the evening.

So how can YOUR group participate?

Contact the SAYW if you have any questions regarding the Syracuse Tour

Recruit a team of adult chaperones (recommend 1 adult per 6 students)

Arrange for your own transportation

Use the provided materials to promote this event

- If you need Posters to advertise please let us know – we will mall them to you.

Invite teens that need to hear about Jesus – THIS IS AN OUTREACH EVENT!!!!!

Maintain registration list and collect permission slips (it is VERY helpful to keep SAYW aware of your numbers as they accumulate)

Send t-shirt sizes along with registration (S, M, L, XL, XXL only)

Register your group (along with tshirt sizes) by Friday, May 8th.
Attend the pre-event prayer/training time on Tuesday night May 12th.

This event has become not only a source of great fun, group building and memory making
but also one that has been noted for it’s effectiveness as an outreach. We are excited to have
you join the SYRACUSE TOUR ’09 this year! Please contact me with any questions.

At the monthly SAYW meeting on June 5, 2008 it was announced that there has been a shift in the structure of the Network’s leadership. Here is a note from Dave Hertweck:

Hey youth workers,

At the meeting this past thursday I announced that I would be stepping down as director of SAYW due to increased responsibilities on a denominational level – it really has been a true joy to serve you and with you for the purpose of impacting teenagers and equipping youth workers – I am glad that I will have the opportunity to stay a part of the leadership team but in a different role.

Rich Ryfun (Believers’ Chapel) will be stepping in as network director – I have a great amount of respect for him as a leader and as a friend – he is the right person at the right time and I am excited about the Network’s future.

Jon Rogers (North Central AG) has served faithfully and excellently as our creative ideas guy for 3-4 years now…he’s in school full time now and feels the need to step down from his position… Chris Szulwach (Liverpool Community) will be taking his place.

So a lot of changes are happening but the faces around the table are the same

We also have restructured the leadership as described below in the notes from the June meeting (note an additional new part of the leadership team – Todd Pearage (North Syracuse Baptist):

There are 4 teams that are being redesigned and 1 new team being added. The purpose of these teams are to get each youth leader involved in SAYW and allow them to participate in a team that they have heart and passion for.

The first team is Relationship, which is led by Chuck Klinger from Northside Baptist Church. This team will create occasional relationship building events and connect youth pastors who are new in the area.

The Resource team is led by Todd Pearage from North Syracuse Baptist Church. This team will develop a list of local, state-wide, and national resources, as well as highlight monthly resources.

The Presence team is led by Dave Hertweck from Trinity Assembly of God. This team will represent SAYW on a community wide level, oversee community service, community trainings, and coordinate See You At The Pole events.

The 4th team is Outreach and is led by Rich Ryfun at Believers’ Chapel. This team will oversee Syracuse Tour, Youth Alive Clubs, and BreakOut.

The final team is the Creative team led by Chris Szulwach from Liverpool Community Church. This team will produce any needed material for events, produce graphics, create a SAYW website, and produce a monthly newsletter.

If you would like more information or are interested in joining one of these teams please see the SAYW Leadership Team Descriptions to retrieve contact information (or utilize the contact page) of each team leader. We look forward to seeing what God is going to do with the Syracuse Area Youth Workers. Our main goal is to connect Youth Workers with each other and to connect them with the community to bring more souls to Christ.

So, don’t miss out on this opportunity… get involved!
